Travelling Sustainably: Our 3 Tips for a More Sustainable Travel Experience

by Sandeep Jhand 16 Jul 2023

After being cooped up at home for so long, many of us are ready to stretch our legs, get out, and travel to the places we want to visit.

Though one of the things we're all most concerned about is the impact of our travel on the planet.

Never fear! We have ways for you to travel sustainably, so you can have a good time and worry less about its impact on the environment. Here are our tips for travelling sustainably.

What Is Sustainable Travelling?

Before we get into it, it is good to know what sustainable travelling is. The UN World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of the visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Our travelling experience should align with our goal of continuing our sustainable lifestyles.

1. Choosing the Right Destination

Start travelling sustainably by choosing the right destination. You can do this by checking out the Environmental Performance Index. It highlights the state of sustainability worldwide, using 40 performance indicators across several categories.

The index ranks each nation based on climate change performance, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality, with Denmark at the number one spot.

2. Consider the Mode of Transportation

You also must consider how you will get there. Air quality is one of the leading environmental threats to public health. If you are travelling far, then plane travel is the only way to reach a great destination. For more sustainable travel by plane, choose a more eco-friendly airline.

Travelling doesn’t mean hopping from one country to another either. You can also reduce your carbon footprint by travelling domestically or camping locally.

3. Reduce Waste and Your Carbon Footprint With the Right Products

When travelling, you want to do what you can to reduce waste just as you would if you were home. This means continuing to use plastic-free, refillable, or recycled products. For example, if you pack snacks, be sure to wrap them in reusable vegan food wraps. For personal care items, try refillable deodorant and mineral toothpaste tablets.

When camping, make sure to pack compostable sponge cleaning cloths that are 100% plastic-free, biodegradable, and compostable. This way, you leave no waste behind.

With the right mindset and products, you can travel sustainably while enjoying your time away.
